To double-check the headings in your manuscript (remember, make sure all of your chapter titles are styled as headings), you can do one of the following:
How to double-check your headings on a Windows PC:
- Go to the Styles panel at the top of the screen.
- Click the arrow icon to pop out the Styles task pane.
- In the Style task pane, click the magnifying glass icon to pop out the Styles Inspector.
- Highlight any text to see what style has been applied to it.
How to double-check your headings on a Mac:
- Click View > Styles to pop out the Styles task pane.
- Click Show Styles Guides.
- On the left side of your screen, you’ll see numbers that correspond to the style in use.

If certain content isn’t converting as expected, it could be because of hidden formatting in your Word document. Try deleting and then re-typing the content. For more advanced troubleshooting, reveal your manuscript’s hidden formatting by turning on non-printing characters in Microsoft Word.
How to turn on non-printing characters on a Windows PC:
- Click the pilcrow icon under the Paragraph panel at the top of the screen, OR
- Press CTRL + SHIFT + 8
How to turn on non-printing characters on a Mac:
- Click the pilcrow icon at the top of the screen, OR
- Press COMMAND (⌘) + 8

Track changes can prevent our tool from recognizing all of the styling in your manuscript. If your manuscript contains Track Changes, please accept all (or remove) Track Changes from your .docx file.
How to accept all Track Changes in Microsoft Word:
- Click Review in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
- Under Changes, click Accept, and then click Accept All Changes in Document.
