6. Format epigraphs and block quotes

If youd like a paragraph to be an epigraph, block quote, or pull quote, underline it in your manuscript. (This is to code the text; it wont appear as underlined in your book.)

For the purpose of emphasizing words, please use italics instead of underlining.

Heres how a block quote/epigraph will look in your manuscript:

Additional info about block quotes:

  • Include attributions in the same paragraph as excerpted text.
  • If the underlined paragraph immediately follows an image, itll be styled as an image caption instead of a block quote.
  • If your excerpt/block quote is several paragraphs long (such as in the case of, say, a letter), italicize it instead of underlining, since this is easier for readers to read.
  • Within a block quote, you cannot italicize, bold, or otherwise format the text at this time. (Were working on it!)
