Authors can include hyperlinks in their manuscripts. However, please note two restrictions:
- Don’t link to specific retailers (like Amazon or iBooks). Some retailers won’t publish books that link to other retailers.
- Don’t include links with “query strings.” (For example, in the URL https://twitter.com/search?q=pronoun, the bolded portion is the query string.) If you absolutely must include a link with a query string, use a URL shortener such as Bitly or Google's URL shortener to get a shorter, cleaner URL.
How to insert a hyperlink in Microsoft Word:
- Highlight the text you’d like to hyperlink.
- Right-click on the highlighted text.
- From the menu which appears, choose Hyperlink.
- Type the web address you’d like to link to.
- Click OK.

Our platform also supports hyperlinked endnotes (where readers click a link to read the endnote, and then another link to return to the chapter).
Please use endnotes rather than footnotes—because reflowable books don’t have “pages,” footnotes won’t always appear the the bottom of the screen. Endnotes, on the other hand, will always appear at the end of your book.
How to insert endnotes on a Windows PC:
- Click where you want to insert the note reference mark.
- On the References tab, in the Footnotes group, click Insert Endnote.
- Type the endnote text.
- Double-click the endnote reference mark to return to the reference mark in the document.
How to insert endnotes on a Mac:
- Click where you want to insert the note reference mark.
- Click Insert > Footnotes.
- Select Endnotes as the location and click Insert.
- Type the endnote text.
- Double-check the endnote reference mark to return to the reference mark in the document.
Finally, please note that we put your book’s references on separate pages because readers can jump to an endnote and then back to the chapter -- having one note per page makes them easier to read.
