7. Insert images

You can add images and illustrations directly to your manuscript, and well automatically center them in your book. We recommend large, high quality, color images. All images must be .jpg, .jpeg, or .png files.

To add an image to your manuscript, insert it after the line of text where you’d like it to appear. You can copy and paste, drag and drop—whatever you prefer. We will maintain approximately the same size dimensions in your book.

Please note that any styling changes you make to your image in Microsoft Word will not be maintained in your book. For example, if you need to rotate your image or adjust its size, please do so before adding the image to your manuscript.

To create a caption, underline the paragraph immediately following an image.

Additional info about images:

  • While you can insert as many images into your manuscript as you like, our conversion technology works best for books that are primarily text. If your book is a graphic novel, childrens book, or coffee table–style photo book, Pronoun’s conversion process isn’t the best fit for your project.
  • Images shouldnt include text (unless youre taking a screenshot of a large table), so dont include pictures of body paragraphs, chapter titles, etc. Text within an image won't resize when your reader changes the text size; this creates a usability issue and could prevent retailers from accepting your ebook for sale.
  • Images can't be included in lists. If you include an image in a bulleted or numbered list, well move it above or below the list during conversion.
  • Our conversion technology interprets images on the first page as cover images—it’s our way of looking out for authors who forget to remove their cover image from their manuscript. However, this means that if the first page of your manuscript text includes an image, then we do recommend including your cover image at the start of your manuscript.
