What are keyphrases?

Keyphrases are search terms—basically, the words people use when they’re searching for something. Keyphrases don’t have to be limited to a single word, and they can be as broad as “religion” or as specific as “Ark of the Covenant.”

How do I select keyphrases on Pronoun?

If you have a specific keyphrase in mind, you can type it in and press “ENTER” to add it to your book.

If you type in a keyphrase and don’t press “ENTER,” we’ll automatically display related keyphrases for you to browse.

If you select one of your book’s categories, we will show you popular Amazon searches for books in that category.

What are Pronoun’s popularity and attainability ratings?

To help authors choose keyphrases, we rate them based on popularity and attainability:

  • Popularity (blue) refers to how often readers search for this keyword. Closer to zero means very rarely, closer to 100 means extremely frequently. For example, “fiction” (a commonly searched term) might have a popularity score of 100, whereas “purple lemonade” (a more uncommon term) might have a popularity score of 0.

  • Attainability (purple) refers to how easy or likely it is for your book to rank well in a search for this keyword. Closer to zero means the search is extremely competitive, closer to 100 means your book has a good chance of ranking highly in the results. For example, “romance” (a keyword used for many books) might have an attainability score of 1, whereas “orange rhino” (a term associated with few  books) might have an attainability score of 100.

We recommend trying to strike a balance between the two, with a mix of popular and attainable keywords. The most important thing is to choose keyphrases that you think readers attracted to your book will be searching for.

What are retailer requirements for keywords?

Retailers don’t accept keywords that include the following:

  • Other authors and books (e.g., “Mockingjay” or “Nora Roberts”)
  • Movies and TV shows (e.g., “Star Wars” or “Rick and Morty”)
  • Franchises unrelated to the book (e.g., “Avengers”)
  • Reference to sales rank (e.g., “bestselling” or “best-seller”)
  • Claims about quality (e.g., “best” or “popular”)
  • Temporarily true statements (e.g., “new release” or “on sale”)
  • Advertisements or promotions (e.g., “free” or “discounted”)
  • Amazon program names (e.g., “Kindle Unlimited”)
  • Information common to most items in the category (e.g., “kindle book”)
  • References to anything unrelated to your book

Please feel free to refer to Amazon’s keyword requirements for more details.
